On one level, Hay Fever is a skimpily plotted situation comedy. Play it as such and there are easy laughs to be had. But glittering shallows will only sustain interest for so long. To make the play really sing, the uneasy laughter has to be found, too, and Imara Savage’s handsome production for the Sydney Theatre Company, locates much of that buried material. It will find the rest as the cast relaxes and allows more of the underlying tensions and awkwardness to the surface.
