Steroids do build muscle tissue quickly. But they do not increase bone-density and tendon/ligament strength at the same rate – and this is where steroid abusers really get themselves into huge trouble, because not only are there some significant geometry changes that affect the skeleton and joints – when the size goes up like that, but the power and leverage that the muscles exert also goes up, which causes a lot of injuries during training; detached and torn tendons and ligaments, weird stress fractures, etc.
Long-term, steroid abusers also suffer from osteoporosis at a high rate, as well as cardiac issues, testicular and prostate cancer.
We can speculate as to why Lance Armstrong got testicular cancer, and why Arnold Schwartzenegger has repeatedly fractured his femur, and had to have heart valves replaced. Though, Arnold Schwartzenegger has denied doing steroids, and said that “it wasn’t illegal when [he] did them.”
