An-225 Mriya is world’s biggest plane with the largest wingspan in any operational service. It was designed by the Soviet Union’s Antonov Design Bureau in the 1980s. The meaning of Mriya is Dream in Ukrainian. So, it can be synonym with the dream project strategic airlift cargo aircraft. The main motive behind it’s built was neither hostile nor humanitarian, but an airborne tow truck for the now-defunct Soviet space shuttle program. This airplane is 290 feet, which is longer than five semi-truck trailers set end-to-end.The wide body of this biggest aircraft is powered by six turbofan engines, which is the longest and heaviest airplane ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes. India is said to require over 200 medium lift turbofan aircraft valued at Rs.35,000 crore, which is the backbone of all tactical transport support of the air force, army and para-military forces.

Mriya has set the absolute world record of takeoff weight and an airlifted total payload. An-225 transported a payload of 156.3 tons on March 22, 1989 which broke 110 air world records. This has become a world record in its turn
